Devi: Shine Your Light in the World

In a world that often feels chaotic, it’s easy to lose touch with your inner light—the spark that connects you to the divine and which empowers you to shine. By engaging in regular yogic practices like Sanskrit chanting, asana, and meditation, you can grow a steady grounding that allows you to radiate your highest self in all that you do.

Connecting with the Divine Through Practice

Each day, you wake up, you have a choice to align with your inner light or not. That light is your essence known as Devi and it resides within you. When you chant Sanskrit mantras you create a vibrational field of understanding and you send that energy to the universe. As you recite a mantra’s powerful sounds, you feel its energy ripple through you, illuminating your consciousness, and inviting divine grace into your life.

Asana, or yoga postures, not only strengthen your body, but also establishes you in the present moment. Something we don’t often do in modern life. When you practice yoga asana, you build your body to be a place where healing energy may flow. This steady physical connection with self, fosters a sense of calm and empowerment that extends beyond your mat into your daily life.

Meditation offers you a chance to pause, and connect with your inner self and the divine. It’s during these quiet sessions where you access the wisdom and strength of the goddess within you. Allow your mind to soften and settle, your breath to expand, and invite clarity and peace to find a place in you.

A Personal Journey: The Gift of Being Called Devi

My own Guru, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, had a beautiful way of honoring women, which he drew from The Tradition. He always called any lady by her name followed by the word "Devi." This practice was not a mere formality; it was an acknowledgment of the divine feminine essence within each woman. When he called me "Manorama Devi," I felt an immediate shift—a recognition of my inherent power and potential as a woman.

This honorific, ‘Devi,’ a word added to ladies' names in yoga, serves as a reminder of the divine light that dwells in every woman. Holding the word Devi close acts as a gentle nudge to awaken that inner strength in you and encourages you to shine that light brightly in the world.

An Exercise to Align with the Inner Goddess

To help you connect with your inner Devi, I invite you to engage in a simple exercise:

  1. Create Your Sacred Space: Find a quiet place where you feel comfortable. Light a candle and burn some incense to set the tone.

  1. Chant a Mantra:

Say the following mantra 9 x’s:

OM Namo Devyai Svāhā

Respect to the Devi, the Cosmic Mother.

  1. Practice Asana: Select 3 yoga poses that feel good to you—perhaps a gentle downward dog or a heart-opening backbend. Focus on your breath and the sensations in your body.

  1. Meditate: Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Visualize the light of the Devi at your heart center, glowing brighter with each breath. Imagine this light expanding outward, illuminating everything in you and around you.

  1. Wear Your Light: Consider wearing the Devi Pendant, a beautiful representation of your inner light and the light you wish shines everywhere. As you put it on, remember that it symbolizes your connection to the divine and serves as a reminder to shine your light in the world.
